Google has released another emergency security update for Chrome due to zero-day vulnerabilities. Zero-day vulnerabilities are known to the public and assumed to be known by malicious actors who are actively exploiting them. The specific vulnerability identified by Google is a critical heap buffer overflow vulnerability in Chrome's code. The vulnerability was reported to Google by Apple Security Engineering and Architecture and the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab. Google has confirmed that the vulnerability has been exploited in the wild but has not provided further details to prevent more exploits from being created.
The patched version of Chrome is being made available to users through updates, and Google is aiming to roll it out to all users in the coming weeks. Additionally, Google has introduced weekly updates for Chrome to ensure regular security updates for users.
Users are urged to install the update (version 116.0.5845.187 for Mac and Linux, and 116.0.5845.187/.188 for Windows) as soon as possible. The update is already available and can be prompted by going to the Chrome menu, selecting Help, and choosing About Google Chrome.
Despite the concerning development, Chrome remains popular, which makes it an attractive target for malicious actors. However, Google's proactive response and quick rollout of the update are commendable.
