WhatsApp Channels, the platform's "one-way broadcast tool," is set to be released to users in over 150 countries. This feature allows specific entities such as government institutions, sports teams, artists, and celebrities to send various forms of content to their followers. The channels are kept separate from chat rooms, ensuring that users won't be flooded with extra messages. The company emphasizes that personal information of both admins and followers is protected, and the channels subscribed to will not be visible to anyone else.In addition to the official launch, WhatsApp is introducing four new features based on user feedback. These include Reactions, which allow users to react to posts using a single emoji, Forwarding, which enables subscribers to share posts with friends, and an Enhanced Directory to help users find popular or newly formed channels. The directory is automatically filtered for each user's country.
WhatsApp has plans to expand the channels feature even further. Channel admins will soon be able to make changes to their posts within a 30-day time frame before the platform deletes everything from its servers. In the coming months, the average user will also be able to create their own personal channel, although no specific date has been given for this feature.
The upgrade is currently rolling out, and there is a waitlist for mobile devices to join on the WhatsApp Help Center page. It is unclear whether the expansion will be exclusive to smartphone users.
