Avast! Intel be swearin' their upcoming CPU treasure be shipshape, but can they match AMD's booty?
2023-09-20
Arr, ye scurvy dogs at AMD be a-givin' Intel a run fer their doubloons in the land o' processors next year. Them bilge rats be ready to make things mighty difficult, mark me words!
Intel has showcased its new Meteor Lake processors, set to release in December, during its Innovation keynote. The company also provided updates on future generations of CPUs, including Arrow Lake and Lunar Lake. Arrow Lake will follow Meteor Lake as the next desktop and mobile offering, while Lunar Lake will focus on power-efficiency for mobile CPUs.During the event, Intel displayed a test system powered by Lunar Lake and CEO Pat Gelsinger mentioned Panther Lake, which will come after Arrow Lake. Panther Lake's chip design is complete and is expected to launch in Q1 2024. However, it is unlikely to be released until at least 2025 or even 2026.
Intel seems satisfied with its progress and anticipates significant leaps in performance from these future generations of processors. Arrow Lake, in particular, is rumored to provide a substantial performance uplift. This is crucial for Intel to compete with AMD's Ryzen 8000 processors, set to make a splash next year.
On the other hand, Intel's upcoming Raptor Lake Refresh has received little attention, as it is mostly a refresh of existing processors. Notably, Intel did not provide any updates on these new desktop chips. With strong competition from AMD, Intel will need Arrow Lake to be a standout product.
The progress made by Intel is impressive, considering that Meteor Lake, which was taped-in in May 2021, is only launching in December 2023. While the release dates for future generations of processors may still be a few years away, Intel's roadmap remains on track.
