Apple is making a big push into original content for iPhone with a major upgrade to its Podcasts app on iOS 17. The company has been teasing these updates for months and has now delivered on its promises. The redesigned app features a more modern and colorful look, with a blurry version of the podcast cover art on the Now Playing screen. The volume and playback progress slides have also been updated to match the style of the Music app. The search results can now be filtered by Top Results, Shows, Episodes, and Channels to make it easier to find specific content.
In addition to the app redesign, Apple is also expanding its content offerings. Starting on September 26, subscribers to Apple Music, Apple News Plus, Calm, or Lingokids will have access to over 60 original podcasts. These podcasts include news briefs, radio shows, educational courses, guided meditations, and narrated articles. The Narrated show on Apple News Plus will provide narrated versions of select articles from publications like GQ and The New Yorker.
Furthermore, Apple is introducing a new API that allows third-party companies to integrate their content apps with Apple Podcasts. This means that users will be able to listen to their favorite shows without having to install another app. The API will initially be supported by publications like the Wall Street Journal, Mamamia, and The Economist.
Overall, these updates demonstrate Apple's commitment to original content and provide users with more options for discovering and enjoying podcasts on their iPhones. The updates are currently rolling out to all users and require iOS 17, iPadOS 17, or macOS Sonoma.
