2023-09-29
Arr, me mateys! Listen up, for I've got tidings of the Meta Quest 3, set to receive body-tracking and grand VR legs afore this year's end. Prepare to be whisked away on a jolly adventure like never afore!
The upcoming Meta Quest 3 update will bring proper body tracking to the VR headset, improving the accuracy of avatars and enhancing immersion. Currently, VR avatars rely on guesswork to determine the position of the user's arms and body, but the new update will utilize the Quest 3's downward-facing side cameras to track the torso, shoulders, elbows, and wrists. This inside-out upper-body tracking system will allow VR experiences to closely mimic the user's actual movements, including movements that were previously difficult to track, such as elbow strikes and bending forward or to the side. However, not all apps will immediately support this new feature, as developers will need to implement the SDK update into their software. Some apps, like Supernatural and Drunken Bar Fight, will support inside-out upper-body tracking from the start. Additionally, the update will also bring improvements to VR legs, addressing a sore spot for Meta. While virtual legs were introduced in September for beta testers, the upcoming update will make them available to more users and in a wider variety of apps.
It's important to note that the VR legs will be AI-generated rather than actually being tracked. While the AI seems to accurately capture leg movements like squatting or jumping, it may not detect movements like lifting up a knee. Despite this limitation, Meta's advancements in tracking and AI suggest that future updates may further improve the realism of VR legs.
