Avast, ye Oculus Quest 2 scallywags! Brace yerselves, for the Meta Quest 3 be plunderin' yer precious storage!

2023-10-10

Arrr, me hearties! Avast ye! The Meta Quest 3 be gettin' fancy upgrades, but alas! These bloated files be devourin' the precious storage of Quest 2. Aye, fear not, for it be a hungry battle betwixt technology and space!

The new Meta Quest 3 VR headset brings many improvements, but it also comes with a downside for Oculus Quest 2 owners – their storage space will feel smaller. VR app developers will release updates to their software to take advantage of the Quest 3's improvements, but Quest 2 owners will also have to download these larger files without benefiting from the improvements.
For example, Red Matter 2 will increase from 5.6GB to 9.1GB. This may not seem like much, but for Quest 2 users with a 64GB model, it accounts for 5.5% of their storage space or 6.2% after accounting for the Quest 2 OS. Currently, developers cannot release separate versions for Quest 2 and Quest 3, but they can release a simplified version for Quest 1.
Meta plans to extend the ability to release distinct versions of apps to the Quest Pro and Quest 3 in the future. Until then, Quest 2 owners may have to delete apps from their library or consider upgrading to the Meta Quest 3 to take advantage of the benefits that come with the larger files.
