Arrr, me hearties! Beware, for Google be mixin' up desktop search wit' a treacherous new Discovery Feed, arrr!
2023-10-13
Arr, mateys! Google be tryin' out a fancy Discovery Feed for their desktop, aimin' to cram a vast treasure trove o' information straight onto thar search engine's home port.
In a humorous twist, Google may introduce a Discovery Feed to its search engine for web browsers, blurring the line between the desktop and mobile experiences. This information was discovered by tech news site MSPowerUser, which found similarities between the feed and Bing and the Google smartphone app, but with added features such as weather forecasts, stock information, and sports scores. However, a Google representative clarified that this is just an experiment currently being run in India, with no confirmation of it being rolled out to other countries. This wouldn't be the first time Google has made changes to its search engine's front page. In the past, there have been various tweaks, including a section dedicated to displaying news stories about the COVID-19 pandemic. The current test is different in that it takes up more screen space, pushing the search bar to the top and making the layout more cluttered. Unfortunately, there may be no way to disable or customize this feature, as Google's Discovery Feed on smartphones cannot be modified.
While it's uncertain if this experiment will become official, it provides insight into Google's potential plans for its search engine. Recently, the company also began testing an image generation tool on its AI-powered Search Generative Experience. It's amusing to see Google chasing after Bing, a role reversal from the past. This raises the question of what other ideas Google might adopt from Microsoft, such as a Chrome version of Microsoft Copilot called Google Assistant.
