Avast ye, me hearties! The sad tale unravelin' in Israel be a stark reminder of the treacherous waters we sail on these 'ere college shores. Aye, danger lurks in every corner, threatenin' both our bodies and the pursuit of true knowledge!

Students in universities across the country are facing self-censorship and fear of expressing their opinions on the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Many students are worried about being attacked or canceled for speaking out or even discussing Israel. The environment on college campuses has become dangerous, both physically and intellectually. University administrators need to acknowledge the true nature of Hamas' attacks in Israel and the fear that Jewish students face in speaking out against anti-Israel sentiments.

Some schools, such as Harvard, Penn, and Northwestern, have made weak statements condemning Hamas but only after facing pressure. The anti-Israel climate on campuses makes it difficult for students to dissent and condemn the notion that Israel is a colonizing, genocidal force. Students fear that their schools do not support them and may even punish them for expressing their views.

A survey by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) reveals that 50% of all students self-censor occasionally or more often out of fear of how their peers or professors would respond. Students feel immense pressure to avoid discussing controversial topics in class, damaging the purpose of higher education as a space for sharing and debating ideas.

Jewish students, in particular, face a heightened level of pressure and fear when discussing Israel. The Pew Research Center found that 82% of Jews see Israel as an essential part of their identity, yet supporting Israel is seen as being on the wrong side of history on college campuses.

The crisis in Israel highlights the fear and silence that many students experience on campus. University administrators must be held accountable for creating an environment that suppresses open expression and freedom of inquiry. Donors are already demanding change, and it may be the beginning of the end for cancel culture on college campuses. Students should not have to suffer in silence.
