The disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021 resulted in the tragic deaths of thirteen service members. In 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine, sparking a major conflict in Europe. Additionally, Israel has faced a terrorist attack and is fighting for its survival. China has also shown increased aggression in the South Pacific and towards Taiwan.The Biden administration's approach to China appears weak and lacking in course correction. Despite occasional stern rhetoric, their actions towards China can be seen as appeasement. A recent summit between John Kerry, Biden's climate envoy, and his Chinese counterpart focused on partnering to combat climate change. However, this partnership seems to prioritize harmful energy regulations and increased prices for Americans, while China continues to approve new coal plants at an alarming rate.
Furthermore, there was no discussion of China's evasion of U.S. sanctions, human rights abuses against Uyghurs, intellectual property theft, fentanyl epidemic, threats towards Taiwan, or economic coercion through the Belt and Road Initiative. The Biden administration's willingness to look the other way for short-term policy concessions is concerning, as it poses a threat to economic and national security.
It is clear that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has global ambitions and aims to erode the United States' superpower status. The hope that opening the economy to China would lead to liberalization has not materialized. Instead, the CCP has tightened control over its people while taking advantage of economic freedom in the West.
To safeguard U.S. interests and values, proactive steps must be taken to economically disentangle from China. This includes enhancing cybersecurity, addressing trade imbalances, promoting human rights, and fostering domestic energy production. By doing so, the United States can work towards a more stable and secure world while ensuring the safety and prosperity of the nation and the global community.
