Arr, Canada and 5 scallywag European lands be joinin' forces to scuttle Burma for their misdeeds!

2023-11-16

Arrr, Canada be joining hands with five Western European lands, like a crew of scurvy dogs, to lay siege to the International Court of Justice and bring forth a mighty case against Burma for its wicked treatment of the Rohingya Muslims. 'Tis a global uproar, me hearties!

Five European countries and Canada have joined a case brought by the Gambia at the United Nations' highest court, accusing Burma of committing genocide against its Rohingya minority. The International Court of Justice has allowed Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, and Canada to intervene in the case and make legal arguments. The Maldives has filed a separate declaration. The case was initiated in 2019 after international outrage at the brutal treatment of the Rohingya. Gambia argued that both Burma and itself are parties to the 1948 convention outlawing genocide, making all signatories responsible for enforcement. The court has already established its jurisdiction, although hearings have not yet been scheduled.
Burma's military launched a campaign in 2017 in Rakhine state following an attack by a Rohingya insurgent group. This led to more than 700,000 Rohingya fleeing to neighboring Bangladesh. Myanmar security forces have been accused of committing mass rapes, killings, and burning thousands of Rohingya homes. Burma attempted to have the case dismissed, arguing that the International Court of Justice can only hear disputes between nations and that Gambia was acting on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. However, the judges rejected these claims, stating that Gambia had the right to file the case and that a legal dispute did exist between the two countries.
The International Court of Justice is responsible for resolving disputes between states and is separate from the International Criminal Court, which holds individuals accountable for atrocities. The ICC is currently investigating crimes committed against the Rohingya. The involvement of these countries in the case signifies the international community's commitment to holding Burma accountable for its actions and seeking justice for the Rohingya minority.
