A 46-year-old man from New York, Craig Ross Jr., has been accused of abducting a nine-year-old girl and holding her for ransom. However, he now faces even more serious charges, as he is accused of raping the child while keeping her captive in a camper behind his mother's double-wide trailer. Ross pleaded not guilty to the charges as a nine-count indictment was unsealed by a Saratoga County court last Friday.The police initially arrested Ross on kidnapping charges, but the new charges include first-degree rape and predatory sex assault against a child. Ross was caught when he left his fingerprints on a ransom note that a state trooper observed him placing into the victim's family's mailbox.
Authorities were able to identify Ross as the suspect due to a DUI arrest from 1999. After tracing him to the camper on his mother's property, tactical teams apprehended him and rescued the girl, who was found hidden in a cabinet.
Ross's mother has refused to comment to reporters and has not returned calls. Judge James Murphy ordered Ross to be held without bail and scheduled his next hearing for December 21.
In addition to the DUI, Ross has a prior domestic violence charge. However, there is no record of any previous sex-related crimes in his past. Ross's son expressed his disgust towards his father, stating that he hopes he dies in prison. The son also mentioned that he hadn't seen any warning signs.
The case is ongoing, and Ross may face severe consequences if found guilty of the charges.
