Arrr! Fox News be hearin' that at the southern border, they be spyin' thousands o' Chinese scallywags and hundreds o' Afghan landlubbers since the start o' this fiscal year, mateys!
Thousands of Chinese nationals and hundreds of Afghans have been crossing the southern border into the United States since the beginning of the fiscal year. Additionally, there have been numerous "gotaways" who have managed to evade Border Patrol. This influx of migrants from various countries has led to concerns about national security. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) sources have reported over 6,500 Chinese nationals and over 700 Afghans encountered at the U.S.-Mexico border since October 1. There have also been significant numbers of encounters from Syria, Iran, and Uzbekistan. In October alone, there were over 1,000 "gotaways" each day. DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas revealed that there were approximately 600,000 gotaways in FY 23. With over 249,000 migrant encounters in October, the arrival of migrants from countries like China, as well as "special interest" countries in the Middle East, has raised concerns about potential national security threats. DHS claims to work tirelessly to screen, vet, and prevent individuals who pose a threat from entering the country. However, FBI Director Christopher Wray has expressed great concern about the number of gotaways and stated that his agency is using all available resources to address the issue. The FBI is also concerned about the lack of information on individuals entering the United States. The Department of Homeland Security's FY 24 threat assessment warns that terrorists and criminal actors may exploit the current situation to enter the country. Overall, there are growing concerns about the security risks at the border and the need for increased surveillance and screening measures.
