A French senator, Joël Guerriau, has been preliminarily charged with drugging a female lawmaker, Sandrine Josso, with ecstasy in order to rape her. Guerriau, a member of the center-right Horizons party, was arrested two days after Josso allegedly had a glass of champagne with him at his Paris home and then complained of feeling unwell. Josso recalled Guerriau grabbing a small plastic bag containing something white in his kitchen. Her lawyer stated that she had to overcome her terror and extricate herself from this ambush. Guerriau was also charged with drugging another lawmaker with the intent of rape or sexual assault. Tests revealed that Josso had ecstasy in her system, prompting her to file a criminal complaint. Police found ecstasy in Guerriau's office and home during a search. Guerriau has been suspended from the Horizons party. His lawyer denies any malicious intent and claims that it was a handling error that caused Josso to fall ill. The two lawmakers had been friends for about 10 years and were not in a romantic relationship. Guerriau, a former banker, has been serving in the French Senate since 2011, while Josso has been in office since 2017. The investigation is ongoing, and Guerriau has been placed under judicial supervision.
