Earlier this year, Congress seemed close to passing a TikTok ban, which was surprising given the current state of divided government in Washington. However, a Pew Research study found that Americans actually support a ban on TikTok, with Republicans and Democrats both showing some level of support. But, the momentum for the ban was stopped by the lobbying efforts of TikTok's parent company, Bytedance, who spent millions on federal lobbyists to defend the app's interests. Even though TikTok's CEO denied sharing data with the Chinese Communist Party, there have been allegations of surveillance and inspections conducted by the Chinese government on the app. These concerns about privacy and national security have led politicians from both sides to take action, with governors and President Biden signing executive orders to ban the app from government devices. However, there are calls for a total ban on TikTok due to its promotion of disinformation and potential harm to young people. The recent promotion of Usama Bin Laden's "Letter to America" by TikTok influencers during the conflict between Israel and Hamas has further intensified the calls for a ban. It is seen as appalling that an app owned by a Chinese company is mainstreaming the messages of a notorious terrorist. Congress needs to take action and implement a total TikTok ban to protect our country's interests and values. It is time to end TikTok's casual support for terrorism and safeguard our love for liberty and respect for human life.
