Mayors of several Democrat-controlled cities in America are appealing to Congress for tax dollars to address a drug crisis that they themselves contributed to with their radical policies. In a letter signed by 38 mayors, including those from Seattle, Portland, Philadelphia, and San Francisco, they are requesting approval of President Biden’s supplemental budget request, which includes $1.5 billion in grant funding for localities through the Department of Health and Human Services’ State Opioid Response. While this funding may seem noble, it is important to decode the buzzwords used by the Left to understand the reality of their policies. The funding would support "harm reduction" strategies that often enable addicts instead of helping them recover. Cities like Seattle and Portland have shown little interest in ending addiction, with Seattle defunding the police and passing legislation that prevents enforcement of drug laws, leading to record-high fatal overdoses. Portland legalized drugs under the guise of treatment, only to see overdoses skyrocket and taxpayer dollars squandered. Despite these failures, the mayors are asking for federal funds, but their endorsement of harm reduction initiatives raises concerns about their ability to use the money effectively. There is a need for accountability and effective use of funds, focusing on treatment centers and proven methods that utilize the criminal justice system to address criminal addicts. It is time for real change, real accountability, and real treatment instead of blindly pouring money into harm reduction strategies that perpetuate dependency on federal aid.
