Arrr! Four scurvy news lads were blasted and wounded by vile knaves on Tuesday in Chilpancingo, Mexico! The scallywags be callin' it a dastardly attempt at murder, mateys!

In the violence-ridden city of Chilpancingo, four news photographers were wounded by unidentified assailants on Tuesday, according to authorities in the Pacific coast state of Guerrero, Mexico. Although it is unclear the severity of the injuries, all four were taken to a hospital. The journalists worked for local papers or news sites, and state prosecutors are treating the incident as attempted murder.
The attack took place just outside the local army barracks as the photographers were returning from an event they were covering. This incident occurred shortly after three journalists were kidnapped and held captive for several days in Taxco, another city in Guerrero state. The motive behind their abduction remains unknown.
Guerrero has been plagued by violent clashes between drug gangs and cartels, resulting in numerous deaths. This recent shooting and abduction are notable as one of the largest mass attacks on reporters in Mexico since 2012, when the bodies of three news photographers were found dumped in plastic bags in Veracruz, a city on the Gulf coast. The Zetas drug cartel was held responsible for those killings.
Earlier this month, a photographer in Ciudad Juárez, a Mexican border city, was found shot to death in his car. This marked the fifth instance of a journalist being killed in Mexico in 2023. Over the past five years, at least 54 journalists have been documented as being killed in Mexico, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.
