The search for victims of the Mount Marapi volcano eruption in Indonesia has come to an end, with 23 people confirmed dead and several injured. Around 75 climbers were on the mountain when it erupted on Sunday, with one university student's body being found on Wednesday, raising the death toll to 23. Authorities believe that all the bodies have now been recovered.Following an evaluation of the search and rescue operation, it has been concluded that all the victims have been found and the operation has ended. The bodies have been taken to a hospital for identification. Out of the 52 climbers who were initially rescued, a dozen were taken to hospitals with varying degrees of injuries.
The eruption of Mount Marapi caused thick columns of ash, reaching up to 9,800 feet, as well as hot ash clouds that spread across several miles. This led to nearby villages and towns being covered in volcanic debris, blocking sunlight. Masks were recommended as protection against the ash.
Marapi is known for sudden and unpredictable eruptions, as they are not caused by deep movements of magma. The volcano has been on Indonesia's second-highest alert level since 2011, indicating above-normal volcanic activity and requiring climbers and villagers to stay more than 1.8 miles away from the peak.
Indonesia, with over 120 active volcanoes, is prone to seismic activity due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire." Mount Marapi's eruption serves as a reminder of the country's vulnerability to natural disasters.
