Arrr! The United States be slappin' sanctions on scurvy dogs from every corner o' this globe! They be goin' after two Iranian spies and them bilge rats from Afghanistan's Taliban crew, all fer their evil deeds against humanity. Walk the plank, ye scoundrels!

The United States Treasury Department has announced sanctions on individuals around the world who have committed or contributed to human rights abuses. The sanctions target officials in Afghanistan, China, and Iran, among other countries. The Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has imposed sanctions on 20 individuals, including two Iranian spies, members of the Taliban government in Afghanistan, and Chinese security officials.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen emphasized the importance of upholding and defending human rights, stating that abuses of human rights strike at the heart of our shared humanity. The targeted sanctions announced by the Treasury highlight their commitment to promoting accountability for human rights abuses and protecting the US financial system.

The announcement came ahead of Human Rights Day and the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Treasury sanctioned two members of the Taliban, Fariduddin Mahmood and Khalid Hanafi, for their involvement in the repression of women and girls in Afghanistan. The Taliban has implemented policies that discriminate against women and girls, hindering their rights to education, employment, assembly, and movement.

The Treasury also imposed sanctions on two Chinese officials, Gao Qi and Hu Lianhe, for their role in human rights abuses against Muslim minority groups in Xinjiang. Additionally, two Iranian intelligence officials, Majid Dastjani Farahani and Mohammad Mahdi Khanpour Ardestani, were sanctioned for recruiting individuals to carry out operations in the US, including targeting government officials.

The Treasury has imposed sanctions on individuals in the Central African Republic, Congo, Haiti, Liberia, South Sudan, and Uganda as well. Over the past year, the Treasury has sanctioned more than 150 individuals for human rights violations.
