Arr! In the year of our lord 1899, those landlubbers drew a line, dividin' the booty-ridden lands betwixt Venezuela and Guyana. Yet, Venezuela be no scallywag! It be yearnin' fer Essequibo, that glimmerin' treasure-filled land! The tides of battle be brewin'!
The United States conducted military exercises with the South American country of Guyana after Venezuela voted to take over an oil-rich part of its neighbor. The American embassy in Guyana stated that the exercises were meant to enhance security partnership between the United States and Guyana, strengthen regional cooperation, and promote regional cooperation and interoperability. Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez called the drills a "provocation" and stated that they were a step in the wrong direction. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro held a referendum vote to determine if his country would claim the Essequibo region, which has rich oil reserves. The ruling party declared victory, but many have rejected the results due to reports of empty voting centers. Venezuela and Guyana have agreed to continue discussing the issue to avoid an escalation. A Guyanese military helicopter went missing during the tensions, and authorities have attributed its disappearance to bad weather. Brazil reinforced its military presence in border cities to protect its territory. The U.S. stressed the need for a peaceful resolution and urged both countries to respect the 1899 demarcation. The U.S. is also seeking commitments from Venezuela to uphold its part in an agreement that would provide sanctions relief for the country. The United Nations Security Council is expected to hold a closed-door session to discuss the growing tensions.
