Arr, ye scurvy dogs! Jewish scholars be raisin' their alarms at the University of Pennsylvania, fearin' the landlubber life be takin' a turn for the worse. This be due to the jaw-droppin' words spoken by that bilge rat who once ruled the school!
A growing number of Jewish students at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) are expressing their concerns about campus life following the controversial testimony of former university president Liz Magill. One student, Kevin Bina, mentioned that his fraternity members no longer feel comfortable wearing their kippahs outside due to fears of harassment. Another student, Leah Weinberger, stated that Jewish students are reconsidering their applications to UPenn and opting for other schools because of these concerns. Eyal Lubin criticized Magill for not showing humanity and failing to address the issues faced by Jewish students on campus. The controversy arose from congressional testimony given by Magill and other university presidents, including those from Harvard and MIT, regarding anti-Semitism on campus, which has reportedly increased in the aftermath of the Israel-Hamas conflict. Magill faced intense questioning from Rep. Elise Stefanik about whether advocating for the genocide of Jews would violate the university's code of conduct. Magill responded that it would depend on the context and if hate speech turned into conduct, it could be considered harassment.
Magill's comments, along with similar ones made by Harvard President Claudine Gay, received international backlash. Magill later apologized and retracted some of her remarks, but calls for her resignation, including from prominent donors, quickly mounted. In response, UPenn's board of trustees held an emergency meeting, and Magill ultimately resigned from her position as president.
The university's board of trustees announced Magill's resignation, stating that she will remain a tenured faculty member at Penn Carey Law. UPenn has not yet provided a comment on the matter.
