Arrr, me hearties! Word be spreadin' that them arson investigators in Gary, Indiana, be on the hunt fer the scurvy dog who be startin' the blaze that tore through a grand ol' high school. Aye, Sunday mornin' it were, aye!
A fire broke out at an abandoned high school in Indiana, causing former students to share their reactions on social media. The Gary Fire Department shared pictures of the flames engulfing the old Ralph Waldo Emerson High School on Facebook, with firefighters from Merrillville and Munster offering assistance. Some former students expressed sadness at the loss of the historic building, reminiscing about their time there as Emersonians. The school, which was the first high school in Gary, Indiana, was built in 1909 and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1995. Despite its historical significance, the building had been vacant since its closure in 2008, and some people believed it was time for demolition. The fire department announced that the fire was extinguished early Sunday morning, but a significant collapse of the building occurred. Arson investigators are looking into the cause of the fire, which reportedly had a similar incident occur months ago. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported. The Gary Community School Corporation confirmed that they no longer own Emerson High School. The building had witnessed vandalism and even crime in the past, including a tragic incident where a 17-year-old girl was found strangled inside the premises in 2015.
