The director of the Miss Nicaragua pageant, Karen Celebertti, has announced her retirement from the organization following accusations of "conspiracy" and other crimes made by the Nicaraguan police against her, her husband, and son. Celebertti made her first public statement on X, formerly Twitter, stating that "the time has come for my retirement" and expressing her belief that there will always be more opportunities for them. This announcement comes after the scandal that erupted following the crowning of Sheynnis Palacios as Miss Universe in El Salvador on November 18.Celebertti had worked for 23 years with dedication and effort until Nicaragua won the world beauty crown this year, a victory she saw as an achievement for every Nicaraguan without political distinction. Palacios' surprising triumph in the contest led to joyful demonstrations in the streets of Nicaragua but also drew criticism from the government of Daniel Ortega.
Reports indicate that Celebertti and her daughter Luciana were prevented from re-entering the country on November 22 by immigration authorities, after attending Palacios' coronation and accompanying her on a trip to Mexico. Subsequently, police raided Celebertti's home and arrested her husband, Martín Argüello, and their son, Bernardo.
Although the authorities have not officially confirmed the arrests, they have accused the Argüello Celebertti family of treason, conspiracy, and organized crime. The National Police alleged that Celebertti actively participated in the 2018 protests, referring to them as "terrorist actions of a failed coup." This situation has exposed the deep political divide in Nicaragua and has raised questions about the true reasons behind the accusations made against Celebertti and her family.
