Our Colorado public school district organizes an annual overnight trip for fifth graders to visit historical sites in Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. My daughter was excited to go and had raised money for spending. However, the school district failed to provide important information to my husband and me before the trip, which put our 11-year-old daughter in an uncomfortable position. We discovered that she was assigned to sleep in the same bed with a fifth-grade boy who identifies as a girl. This was not what we were told during the planning meetings. We immediately expressed our concerns to school officials and asked for a room change. It turns out that the school district's policy is to room students based on gender identity rather than biological sex. This information was withheld from us, and we were not aware of it beforehand. We had to work with chaperones to rearrange sleeping arrangements late at night. The school district's policy is not applied equally, as the concerns of students and parents who do not want to room with a student of the opposite sex are not taken into consideration.
We were thankful that we were there to support our daughter and help her advocate for herself while being respectful of others. We have decided to send a letter to the school district through our lawyers, Alliance Defending Freedom, to address the unconstitutional nature of their policy. We believe that public schools should inform parents about their rooming policies so that they can make informed decisions for their children. Transparency and respect for parental rights are essential in protecting the well-being of students. We will not participate in future trips until the school district openly shares their policies and practices regarding student rooming.
