A Texas man, Rotimi Oladimeji, has been sentenced to three years in federal prison and ordered to repay $1.2 million after being involved in a romance scam that targeted a Missouri woman. Oladimeji, along with two others, approached the victim on the "Silver Singles" online dating site.Pretending to be a Belgian national living in St. Louis, Oladimeji and his associates planned to meet with the woman but never followed through. They claimed that Oladimeji was stuck in the United Arab Emirates due to a business deal gone wrong and needed money.
The victim ended up losing nearly $1.2 million, with Oladimeji receiving around 20% of the funds. He is now responsible for fully reimbursing the victim, unless his co-defendants contribute towards the repayment.
Oladimeji, originally from Nigeria, may face deportation after his release from prison. His accomplices, Olumide Akrinmade and Adewale Adesanya, have also pleaded guilty to federal charges. Akrinmade received 15 months in prison and must repay $46,500, while Adesanya was sentenced to four years in prison and ordered to repay $1.5 million for various fraud schemes.
