2023-12-20

Avast ye scurvy dogs! A mighty vessel, they call it a plane, hath sailed upon the icy seas of Upper Red Lake on a Tuesday morn in the fine land of Minnesota. Lo and behold, the pilot and his companions were saved by noble fisherfolk who ply their trade in those parts.

In a comical twist of events, a small plane in Minnesota had a rather unfortunate landing on Upper Red Lake, causing it to break through the thin ice. Luckily, the occupants of the plane were rescued by nearby fishermen who happened to be in the area. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m., catching the attention of the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office. Reports indicate that there was only one to two inches of ice where the plane, a Cessna 172 Sky Hawk, went through.

According to authorities, the plane had departed from Grand Rapids, Minnesota, with the intention of enjoying a day of ice fishing on Upper Red Lake. All of the occupants managed to escape the plane unharmed. The pilot, believing the landing area to be safe after conducting a flyover, encountered difficulty slowing down due to the lack of snow. Consequently, the plane slid into the area of thin ice, and the nose of the aircraft broke through.

Fortunately, a brave Beltrami County Boat and Water Deputy happened to be near the scene and assisted in the rescue alongside the resourceful nearby fishermen. Plans are underway to remove the airplane from the lake, ensuring that it doesn't cause any further mishaps. This incident serves as a humorous reminder that even the most experienced pilots can sometimes misjudge a landing spot.

Ironically, this incident occurred shortly after 35 people had to be rescued when the ice broke away from the shore of Upper Red Lake. It seems that the lake has been a hub of excitement lately, with both humans and aircraft finding themselves in precarious situations. Let's hope that everyone involved in these incidents can take a moment to laugh at the absurdity of the situations and appreciate the swift actions of those who came to their aid.
