Avast ye scurvy dogs! A swashbucklin' lass from Iran, wedded at a tender age o' fifteen, be now walkin' the plank to Davy Jones' Locker fer takin' her scurvy husband's life. Arrr! The lass met her fate on this fine Wednesday mornin'!
An Iranian woman named Samira Sabzian, who had been forced into marriage as a child and imprisoned for murdering her husband, was executed on Wednesday despite pleas from human rights organizations for leniency. According to Iran Human Rights (IHRNGO), Sabzian was hanged in Ghezelhesar Prison. The director of IHRNGO, Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, described Sabzian as a victim of "gender apartheid, child marriage, and domestic violence."Amiry-Moghaddam criticized the Iranian regime, calling it "incompetent and corrupt" and stating that they must be held accountable for the crime. Sabzian had been incarcerated for ten years after being arrested for the murder of her husband. IHRNGO claimed that she was forced into marriage at the age of 15 and was a victim of domestic violence. At the time of her arrest, she had two young children, including a newborn baby. She was only able to see them again when they came to say their goodbyes before her execution.
The UN High Commissioner of Human Rights expressed alarm at Sabzian's execution and urged Iran to establish a moratorium on all executions, with the aim of abolishing the death penalty altogether. IHRNGO stated that Iran is one of the world's leading executioners of women, with nearly 200 women executed since 2010. In more than half of these cases, the women were convicted of killing their husbands, despite having no right to divorce, even in situations involving domestic violence and abuse. This highlights the dire situation faced by women in Iran and the urgent need for change in the country's legal system and treatment of women's rights.
