Avast ye landlubbers! The scallywag prosecutors be denyin' the noble request of New Jersey's matey, the Democrat Sen. Bob Menendez, to delay his trial of federal bribery. Arrr, 'tis set for May, it be!
Federal prosecutors have opposed a request by New Jersey Democrat Senator Bob Menendez and his co-defendants for a two-month delay to their bribery trial, which is currently set for May. They urged a U.S. judge to reject the plea, stating that the current schedule is expedited but reasonable. Menendez's defense lawyers argued that they needed more time to review the 6.7 million documents related to the case, citing its complexity. However, prosecutors claimed that they had made good-faith efforts to assist the defense in their review. They argued that the additional time requested by the defense was not justified, as it was not unique to this case. Menendez, his wife Nadine, and three New Jersey businessmen were charged in a federal bribery scheme in September. According to the indictment, Menendez and his wife engaged in a corrupt relationship with the businessmen, accepting bribes to use Menendez's power and influence as a senator to benefit them and the Arab Republic of Egypt. The alleged bribes included cash, gold bars, mortgage payments, and a luxury vehicle. Prosecutors also accuse Menendez of sharing confidential U.S. government information with one of the businessmen to support the Egyptian government. Menendez faces additional charges of acting as a foreign agent.
