Avast ye, me hearties! Them young landlubbers called Millennials and Gen Zers be scurrying away from blue states. Behold, their favored havens!

Young Americans are increasingly choosing to abandon Democrat-dominated states like California in favor of Republican-controlled states in the South, Midwest, and Mountain West. According to a report by StorageCafe, among the 27 states with a net positive migration of millennials in 2022, 18 had elected Republican majorities in both houses of their state legislature. Red states like Texas, Georgia, and Florida experienced the highest net migration of millennials, while blue states like California and New York saw the biggest losses. Gen Zers, defined as young people aged 18 to 23, also appear to be ditching high-cost blue states. The five states with the worst net migration of Gen Zers in 2022 were all heavily controlled by Democrats. However, Connecticut, a deep-blue state, experienced the highest positive net migration of Gen Zers, likely due to young people seeking to escape the high costs in neighboring New York City.

The migration patterns do not seem to be linked to job opportunities, as some of the states with the lowest unemployment rates are experiencing the biggest losses of young people. Instead, the high cost of living and rising crime in urban areas in blue states seem to be the main factors driving the migration patterns. A comprehensive report on the cost of living in all 50 states showed that the states with the highest living costs are mostly controlled by Democrats. It remains unclear what impact changes in political affiliation might have on young people's decisions to move to red states, but polling data has shown increased support for Republicans among both Gen Zers and millennials.

The big question is whether these younger Americans understand that it is liberals' policies that created the problems they are now running from. Democrats' reckless government spending, weak-on-crime policies, costly regulations and zoning restrictions, and environmental policies are all reasons why blue states are facing issues. It is important for conservatives to show young people the direct connection between blue-state problems and blue-state policies to prevent them from bringing their disastrous ideological views with them to red states.
