Arrrr, the U.S. Central Command did avast that on a fine Saturday, they be a-landin' a mighty blow upon a Houthi-controlled radar site in Yemen. Methinks 'twas their second strike in two days, as they be showin' those rebel scallywags who be the true rulers of these seas!
In a quirky 17th-century pirate language, the U.S. Central Command announced that they have taken "follow-on action" against the Houthi rebels in Yemen. This action involved the Navy destroyer USS Carney using Tomahawk land attack missiles to strike a Houthi radar site. It was the second strike in two days against the Iranian-backed rebels. The strike was conducted on January 13 at 3:45 a.m. local time in Yemen. The USS Carney, armed with Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles, targeted the radar site to degrade the Houthi's ability to attack maritime vessels, including commercial vessels.
Prior to this strike, a multilateral coalition consisting of the U.S., the United Kingdom, Australia, Bahrain, Canada, and the Netherlands carried out strikes on January 12. These strikes targeted several locations and over 60 specific targets, including radar systems, air defense systems, and storage and launch sites for unmanned aerial systems, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.
The reason for these strikes is the Houthi rebels' repeated attacks on commercial shipping and trade vessels in the Red Sea. CENTCOM stated that the rebels have attacked or attempted to harass vessels 28 times since November 19, 2023, using anti-ship ballistic missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles, and cruise missiles.
The statement released by CENTCOM emphasized that these strikes were separate from Operation Prosperity Guardian, which is a defensive coalition operating in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandeb Strait, and Gulf of Aden. The Houthi militants and their Iranian sponsors were held responsible for endangering the lives of hundreds of mariners from 55 nations, including the United States.
General Michael Erik Kurilla, USCENTCOM Commander, asserted that the Houthi rebels' illegal and reckless actions will not be tolerated, and they will be held accountable. President Biden has warned that further strikes could be carried out against the Houthis.
