In a shocking incident, two maintenance workers in Houston discovered a two-year-old girl bound with duct tape while servicing a dishwasher in an apartment. The child showed signs of physical abuse, psychological abuse, neglect, and was malnourished. Doctors stated that she may not have survived the night if she hadn't been brought to the hospital.The maintenance workers had gone to the apartment on November 28, 2023, after receiving a work order. While repairing the dishwasher, they heard the child cry and found her lying on the living room floor with her legs duct taped. They immediately took pictures and videos, alerted the authorities, and left the apartment.
The girl's cousin, Toniesha Deshae Perkins, her boyfriend Kenry Joseph Flukers, and the child's aunt, Mya Jhari Breaux-McGruder, who all lived in the apartment, were arrested and charged with injury to a child and unlawful restraint of a minor.
Flukers denied seeing the child with duct tape around her ankles but admitted to seeing it around her hands, claiming it was to prevent her from sneaking food. Perkins blamed her children for tying up the toddler when confronted with the photo. The couple's six-year-old twins stated that they saw their parents duct tape the two-year-old because she wasted food and that they were physically abused with a belt.
The toddler had been in the care of Perkins for the past three months, as her mother lived out of state. Five other children in the home appeared to be in good health. Attorneys for the defendants did not respond to requests for comment.
This disturbing case highlights the importance of vigilance and reporting suspicious incidents. The child's rescue by the maintenance workers undoubtedly saved her life and led to the arrest of those responsible for her abuse.
