The DSA, of which Ocasio-Cortez is a member, is reportedly in a dire cash crunch, prompting leaders to propose drastic measures to protect their finances. The proposed plan includes cutting $500,000 from staff-related expenses, potentially leading to layoffs and severance packages. The organization's financial troubles, which were first reported by the New York Post, have forced leaders to consider significant budget cuts. According to DSA members, staff-related costs account for a large portion of their expenditures and projected income. The current deficit may require them to make seven-figure budget cuts, impacting all levels of the organization. Ocasio-Cortez's office and the DSA have not yet responded to requests for comment. The DSA has also faced criticism for its response to the Hamas invasion of Israel, leading to the departure of one of its founding members, Maurice Isserman. Isserman cited the DSA's morally and politically bankrupt response as the reason for his departure. Other Democratic lawmakers, including Rashida Tlaib, Cori Bush, and Greg Casar, are also members of the DSA.
