Arrr, me hearties! A wee Primo Levi quote scribbled on them fancy papers fer a pro-Palestinian shindig be raisin' all manner o' ruckus! Accusin' the scallywags o' twistin' the words of a Holocaust survivor, they be! Walkin' the plank they should, arrr!
An Italian Jewish leader has voiced her protest against the use of a citation from Holocaust survivor Primo Levi on flyers for a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Rome. The demonstration is planned to take place on International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Noemi Di Segni, head of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, criticized the use of the quote, urging the organizers to find other citations that do not offend the memory of a survivor. Di Segni expressed concerns that the memory of the Holocaust was being used out of context and abused to turn against Israel or the Jews. She highlighted distorted words from various figures, including rectors, teachers, politicians, and institutional figures. Despite the rise in anti-Semitic sentiment during the Israel-Hamas conflict, Di Segni stated that Italy's Jewish communities would still hold hundreds of events to observe Remembrance Day out of duty. She emphasized that the purpose of remembering the Holocaust is not to cry over the Jews, but to be aware of Italy's responsibilities and the role of fascism in the tragedy. Marathon foot races that were scheduled to take place in several Italian cities on Remembrance Day were canceled due to security concerns. Di Segni criticized the fact that fascist salutes are almost protected by constitutional freedoms in Italy, citing recent far-right rallies and a high-court ruling on the matter. Furthermore, she mentioned a planned demonstration against the "genocide against the Palestinian people" using the phrase "Never Again," associated with the lessons of the Holocaust.
