Emmer suggested that reinstating Trump's Remain in Mexico policy and ending catch and release would significantly reduce the number of people crossing the border. He argued that Biden's interest in border security is solely due to political pressure. Emmer criticized a statement released by Biden promising to shut down the border when overwhelmed, stating that it includes provisions that contradict effective border control. He emphasized that Trump had successfully secured the border during his presidency, while the current administration has undone that progress. House Speaker Mike Johnson also expressed doubts about the bill's chances, suggesting it could be "dead on arrival."
