Pakistan and Iran have agreed to improve security cooperation after deadly airstrikes were conducted by both countries earlier this month. The airstrikes resulted in the death of at least 11 people and escalated tensions between the neighboring nations. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian held talks with his Pakistani counterpart and also met with Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister. The airstrikes were carried out by Iran in Pakistan’s Baluchistan province, targeting hideouts of a Sunni militant group. In retaliation, Pakistan launched airstrikes against alleged militant hideouts in Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan province. Pakistan recalled its ambassadors from Tehran following the strikes. In a joint news conference, the foreign ministers of both countries announced their commitment to work through existing channels at leadership, diplomatic, and military levels to cooperate with each other. Regular future meetings at ministerial levels and between liaison officers were also announced. Both countries emphasized the importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity in their cooperation. They also pledged to set up free trade economic zones near the border regions to enhance bilateral trade. The airstrikes and subsequent tensions were partially prompted by internal political pressures and raised concerns about violence spreading across the Middle East. During his visit, Amirabdollahian also briefed his hosts about an incident where gunmen shot and killed Pakistani laborers in Iran. Pakistan condemned the attack and arrangements were being made to bring back the bodies of the victims.
