Hundreds of people from various faiths gathered at the International Religious Freedom Summit to promote religious liberty worldwide. This year, the event saw a significant number of attendees under the age of 25, highlighting the importance of youth involvement in advocating for religious freedom. Dr. Nguyễn Dinh Thang, the summit's Youth Chair, emphasized the need to prepare young advocates to lead the movement, warning that the opposition would continue to grow if they were not empowered. Kinan Abdelnour, a George Washington University student and volunteer at the summit, stressed the necessity of addressing the niche problem of religious freedom, which is often overlooked in broader discussions of human rights. The recent Israel-Hamas conflict has also sparked protests on college campuses, and Syrian native Abdelnour, appreciating the freedom of protest in America, considers it a blessing even if opinions differ. Robert Rehak, a Czech Republic ambassador, became involved in religious freedom advocacy due to his personal experience with religious persecution under communist rule. He believes that the younger generation should be included in the conversation to raise awareness about the atrocities committed against religious minorities worldwide. Mervyn Thomas, CEO of CSW, and Annie McKinney, a member of the Board of Trustees at the Parliament of the World's Religions, both emphasized the importance of using social media and pop culture to engage and inform young people about religious freedom issues. They drew inspiration from the climate change movement and its successful use of social media platforms to raise awareness. Overall, promoting youth involvement and leveraging social media are seen as crucial strategies to advance the cause of religious freedom.
