2024-02-06

Arrr, me hearties! On Tuesday, the scurvy dogs of the GOP-led House be casting their vote on the impeachment of the landlubber DHS Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas. They be claimin' his handling of the southern border crisis be more disastrous than a shipwreck.

The House of Representatives, led by Republicans, failed to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his handling of the crisis at the southern border. The vote was mostly along party lines, but Republicans suffered several defections, resulting in a vote of 214-216. Mayorkas was accused of refusing to comply with federal immigration laws and violating public trust. This marks the first time a Cabinet secretary has been impeached since 1876. Republicans have criticized Mayorkas for his "open border policies," pointing to the rollback of Trump-era policies and the increase in border apprehensions. They argue that these policies have fueled the ongoing crisis at the southern border, with numbers breaching 300,000 in December. Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green stated that millions of inadmissible aliens are encountered and eventually released into communities, which has never happened before. Despite the impeachment push, Democrats and the administration dismissed it as politically motivated and lacking evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors. Mayorkas himself called the allegations against him false and baseless. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has countered the claims of open border policies by highlighting the over 500,000 removals since May and record seizures of fentanyl at the border. The DHS has also called on Republicans to provide more funding and work with the administration to fix the broken immigration system. A DHS official referred to the impeachment effort as a distraction from national security priorities and the necessary work to address immigration laws.
