Arr matey! Oklahoma be payin' respects to Toby Keith, a true-blue Sooners mate, with a heartwarming tribute afore a basketball brawl!

The Oklahoma Sooners paid tribute to country singer Toby Keith, a native of the state, who passed away at the age of 62 after battling stomach cancer. Keith had been a dedicated supporter of all Oklahoma athletics throughout the years. Before the Sooners' men's basketball game against BYU, a guitar with a red OU solo cup was set up in the seat next to athletic director Joe Castiglione in honor of Keith. The solo cup was a signature drinking receptacle mentioned in one of his hit songs. A moment of silence was held for Keith prior to the game. The OU Athletics family expressed deep sadness over his passing, describing him as an American icon, a stalwart Sooner, and a superstar talent. Keith's family confirmed that he passed away peacefully and asked for privacy during this time. Keith was diagnosed with stomach cancer in June 2022. Throughout his career, Keith had numerous country music hits, including "Should've Been a Cowboy," which was the most-played country song of the 1990s. He was also known for patriotic songs like "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)" and his support for the military, having gone on 11 USO tours and raising money for military members through philanthropic efforts. Keith's loyalty to his country and home was evident through his unwavering support for the Sooners.
