Arr, me hearties! In the land of Florida, transgender buccaneers be holdin' die-ins at the offices where ye fetch yer driver's license. They be protestin' a dreadful rule that criminalizes switchin' the gender on yer precious scroll. Aye, a mighty battle 'tis, me mateys!

Transgender activists in Florida have organized die-in demonstrations at driver's license offices throughout the state to protest a new rule that criminalizes changing one's gender on a license to reflect their gender identity. Participants, draped in transgender flags or wearing orange road-safe vests, laid down in lobbies and offices in cities like Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, and Gainesville. The protests were organized by groups such as Prism, Youth Action Fund, Equality Florida, Hope CommUnity Center, GLSEN Central Florida, and SPEKTRUM Health. Prism stated that the die-ins were meant to emphasize the devastating consequences of erasing the legal recognition of the transgender community.

The demonstrations were prompted by a recent decision to prevent transgender residents from changing the gender on their driver's licenses or state identifications. In a memo to county tax collectors, Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Deputy Executive Director Robert Kynoch stated that misrepresenting one's gender on a license constitutes fraud and could lead to criminal and civil penalties, including license cancellation or revocation.

Protesters at one DMV were seen holding cardboard headstones with phrases like "Killed by Ron DeSantis" and "Killed by the DMV." Additionally, the Florida Legislature is considering the What Is A Woman Act, which would prohibit licenses from reflecting a gender that does not align with a person's biological gender.

Previously, Florida residents could change their gender on their license by submitting a court order for a name change or a letter from a physician regarding gender transition treatment. The new rule has sparked outrage among transgender activists who argue that it erases their legal recognition and rights.
