A Florida couple, Tawnya and Devin White, have been arrested and charged with negligent child abuse after two young children were found living in "deplorable" conditions. The arrest came after the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) received a report about the hazardous environment at their home in Alturas. The DCF had been attempting to inspect the home since January 21 but requested the assistance of law enforcement after facing resistance. Tawnya, who had been working for the DCF for 13 years, was terminated after her arrest. The couple had a seven-month-old baby and a seven-year-old child living with them, along with five dogs, four of which were kept inside the home. When deputies arrived at the scene, they observed overgrown grass and scattered debris outside, while the interior was described as "deplorable" with moldy furniture, stagnant water, junk debris, and piles of dog feces. The couple admitted to the poor conditions of the residence, with Tawnya stating that her husband's limited mobility due to a car wreck and her full-time job with the DCF made it difficult for them to maintain the home. The children were confined to the master bedroom, and the infant appeared to be delayed in development due to being confined in a bassinet all day. Photos taken inside the home showed trash, knives, dog feces, and a strong smell of dog urine. The kitchen was blocked with items, and there were no areas for food consumption or preparation. The house also had high Ammonia levels. Despite having 19 days to clean the house, the conditions remained unsafe for the children. Both Tawnya and Devin were arrested and taken into custody without incident.
