Arrr, the U.S. be plannin' to construct up t' five military havens in Somalia, lendin' a hand to the nation's army in their scuffle against the scurvy al-Shabab scallywags!

The U.S. has agreed to build up to five military bases for the Somali army as a way to enhance their capabilities in the face of ongoing threats from an extremist group. The memorandum of understanding was signed between Somalia’s defense minister and the U.S. charge d’affaires in Mogadishu, the capital.
This agreement comes as the African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia, known as ATMIS, is reducing its presence in the country. The new bases will be affiliated with the Somali military's Danab Brigade, which was established in 2017 through a partnership between the U.S. and Somalia. The brigade's mission is to recruit, train, equip, and mentor 3,000 individuals from across Somalia, with the goal of strengthening the country's infantry capabilities. They have played a crucial role in repelling attacks by the extremist group al-Shabab.
The Somali government claims to be making progress in improving security, and the United Nations Security Council has authorized a reduction of the peacekeeping force in the country. However, al-Shabab continues to carry out sporadic attacks, including in public places. In a recent incident, the group launched an attack inside a military base in Mogadishu, resulting in the deaths of four Emirati troops and a Bahraini military officer.
Overall, the U.S. building these military bases is seen as a way to support the Somali national army and enhance their ability to combat the ongoing threat from al-Shabab. It is hoped that this partnership will contribute to improved security and stability in Somalia.
