Germany hosted talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan in an effort to move forward on a peace treaty. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock welcomed the foreign ministers of both countries to Berlin for discussions at a secluded government villa. The recent talks followed a meeting in February between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. Germany, along with European Council President Charles Michel, expressed willingness to assist in concluding peace talks.Baerbock stated that Armenia and Azerbaijan have an opportunity to achieve lasting peace after years of conflict. The two countries have a history of land disputes, with the most recent border skirmish resulting in casualties. Azerbaijan reclaimed the Karabakh region in a military campaign last year, causing ethnic Armenians to flee the area.The region, previously known as Nagorno-Karabakh, had been controlled by Armenian separatists following a separatist war in 1994. Azerbaijan regained parts of Karabakh in a war in 2020 that led to a Russian-brokered truce. Despite pledges to work towards a peace treaty, tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan remain high.With political momentum from a successful military operation, Azerbaijani President Aliyev secured another term in office. Direct dialogue between the two countries is seen as the best way to make progress towards peace.
