Venezuela's government, its allies, and other groups have announced a proposal for the upcoming presidential election, suggesting over 20 potential dates from March to December. The proposal will be presented to the National Electoral Council, who will choose the date. Choosing a date before July 1 would violate an agreement signed in October with a faction of the opposition. The document does not address the participation of banned candidates, including President Nicolás Maduro's rival Maria Corina Machado. It also calls for inviting national and international electoral observers and setting a financial support scheme for political parties and candidates.The Unitary Platform, backed by the US, did not participate in drafting the proposal but met with Maduro's representatives last week. Chief negotiator Gerardo Blyde presented violations of the Barbados agreement to National Assembly leader Jorge Rodríguez. Machado expressed that she was not invited to the meetings that led to the agreement. The proposal includes 27 possible dates and urges the announcement of a date by March 31.
