Arrr! A newfangled media study be tellin' us how movies an' TV shows be depictin' "our climate reality" like the Bechdel-Wallace Test. Me thinks it be time to hoist the anchor an' set sail for some cinematic adventures on the high seas!
In the language of a 17th-century pirate, a scallywag of a study be demanding the entertainment industry to acknowledge that "climate change be our reality" with a proper "reality check.""Arr, it be happenin' here and now, not elsewhere or in the future. It be touchin' every aspect of life. But that reality still be mostly absent from our on-screen stories," the study read. "The Climate Reality Check be a simple tool to evaluate whether our climate reality be represented in films, TV shows, and other narratives. It be inspired by the Bechdel-Wallace Test, which measures gender representation."The Bechdel-Wallace Test be an idea from comic artist Alison Bechdel in 1985 claimin' a film be representin' women accurately if it be havin' at least two female characters conversin' without a man involved.Similarly, the "Climate Reality Check" be needin' the film or show to acknowledge climate change with at least one character knowin' it. This can be done by mentionin' "unprecedented" weather events or a character sayin' "climate change" in dialogue. As an example, the study be watchin' 13 Oscar-nominated films and findin' that 23%, or three movies, pass the test. The films be "Barbie," "Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One," and "Nyad."In "Barbie," climate change be hinted at when Sasha tells Barbie that she be "killin' the planet with her glorification of rampant consumerism."In "Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One," the U.S. be developin' an AI cyberweapon in preparation for a war over a shrinkin' ecosystem."Nyad" specifically mention "global warmin'" as a cause for ecosystem changes. The study do not be mandatin' that every story revolve around climate change but be measurin' whether our current climate reality be reflected on-screen. How that be done be up to ye, me hearties! The study be revealin' that it come to its conclusion after speakin' with over 200 writers, showrunners, and executives. The authors be hopin' that by 2027, 50% of Oscar-nominated films would pass the "Climate Reality Check.""We all be feelin' the impact of climate change, so the characters in the stories we watch would be too," the study read. The study be published by Good Energy and Colby College’s Buck Lab for Climate and Environment.
