Arrr mateys! 'Tis a sad tale indeed. Over 8,500 of our brethren met their end on land and sea routes last year. 'Tis a record high since tallying began in 2014, says the U.N. migration agency. Let's hope we all stay afloat and safe on our journeys ahead!
In the language of a 17th-century pirate, me hearties, a total of 8,565 poor souls met their watery graves on land and sea routes last year, according to the scallywags at the U.N. migration agency. Arr, that be a record high since they began tallying the dead a decade ago, ye see.The treacherous Mediterranean Sea saw the biggest increase in deaths last year, with 3,129 unfortunate souls perishing on the high seas, much to the dismay of their families and communities. Most of these poor souls met their fate through drowning, a tragic end to their journeys.Asia also saw a sharp rise in deaths, with over 2,000 migrants losing their lives compared to previous years. The dangerous "Darien Gap" in Panama proved to be a deadly passage for many migrants on their way north. The Geneva-based migration agency warned that the figures likely underestimate the true toll of these tragedies, as improved data collection methods play a part in their calculations. Each death is a terrible human tragedy that echoes through families and communities for years to come, as Deputy Director General Ugochi Daniels solemnly declared.
