Arrr mateys, keep a weather eye out for the union mark on ye college sports crew! The scallywag unions be tryin' to plunder the treasure of college athletes, but beware, it be bringin' a curse upon the lads and lasses and their shipmates. Aye!

The Dartmouth College basketball team has made history by forming the first union in college sports. Some see this as a positive step for student athletes, but my experience as a collegiate track and field athlete tells me otherwise. Despite not receiving a scholarship, I found value in the shared experiences and camaraderie of being a student athlete. While unions may promise a more professional environment and protection from exploitation, they overlook the intangibles that make college sports special. The potential for increased costs, less scholarships, and the threat of program closures loom large if student athletes unionize. For many student athletes, like myself, who will not go on to play professionally, the impact of unionization could be detrimental to the programs and teams they love. The focus on money and benefits may ultimately jeopardize the core essence of collegiate sports and the bonds formed through shared dedication and teamwork. In the end, the potential consequences of unionization may outweigh the perceived benefits, especially for those student athletes who participate in non-revenue generating sports or programs at smaller schools.
