In a tale fit for the high seas, federal authorities have thwarted a dastardly gun trafficking operation aimed at arming Mexican drug cartels with a treasure trove of over 100 "military-grade" firearms, as revealed in court documents. The scallywags behind this scheme were five men who were caught on March 20, accused of pillaging weapons throughout Texas to smuggle them across the border. The arsenal included prized FNH SCAR rifles, Barrett .50 caliber rifles, FNH M294S rifles, and M1919 rifles, all coveted by Mexican drug cartels for their firepower and battlefield prowess. These weapons symbolize cartel profit, power, and prestige, helping them engage in battles and maintain control over their territories. The alleged mastermind, Gerardo Rafael Perez Jr., sought to arm cartels in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico, while his crew of straw purchasers illicitly secured weapons across Texas. The scheme involved purchasing firearms for prohibited individuals, a crime made punishable by a bipartisan gun safety bill enacted in 2022 by Texas Sen. John Cornyn. The operation began to unravel when suspicious circumstances arose during a sale in January 2023, leading to the arrest of several suspects and the discovery of a cache of weapons in Laredo. Now facing a federal indictment, these young buccaneers could be looking at up to 25 years in the brig if found guilty of their treacherous deeds.
