Arrr, me hearties! Methinks Google be bringin' back an ancient notion with Tab Declutter! 'Tis a clever trick to stash away them forgotten tabs sailin' the high seas of the internet for eons. Aye, 'tis a jolly good idea indeed!

Recent evidence suggests that Chrome on Android may receive a new Tab Declutter tool to help people manage the multitude of open tabs. Hints of this feature were discovered in lines of code on Google’s Chromium platform by 9To5Google. It’s unknown exactly how Tab Declutter will work, but tabs that have been unused for a long period of time will automatically be put away in an archive. You can then go over to the archive editor, review what’s there, and decide whether to delete a tab or restore it. Tab Declutter could not only help people manage a messy browser but also boost Chrome’s performance, as all those open tabs can slow down a device's RAM.
This isn’t the first time Google has worked on improving tab management for its browser. Previous efforts include an organizer tool that uses AI to group tabs based on topic. The new Declutter tool seems similar to a feature that was developed in 2020 but never implemented. Speculation on how the Tab Declutter tool will function includes concerns about potentially annoying features and questions about setting time limits or exception lists for certain websites.
There is no official launch date for Tab Declutter, but speculation suggests it may arrive in early May as part of Chrome 125. However, a late summer to early autumn release may be more likely.
