An 18-year-old Honduran man, Elmer Rueda-Linares, was arrested for a crash that killed a adviser to Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto. He was in the country illegally, having been detained at the border in 2021 and then released. The collision took place in Reno, Nevada, resulting in the death of Kurt Englehart. Rueda-Linares was initially charged with hit-and-run but it was changed to failing to stop at the scene of an accident. He is currently held on $100,000 bail at Washoe County Jail. ICE placed an immigration detainer on him on April 8. Rueda-Linares entered the U.S. without inspection at the Rio Grande City, Texas, Port of Entry. He was arrested by Border Patrol, released on his own recognizance, and later involved in the fatal crash. Cortez Masto expressed condolences and praised Englehart for his dedicated service in her office. Englehart was a respected public servant with a background in political science and public administration.
