Arrr mateys, the scallywags at the U.N. be tellin' South Sudan to scrap those pesky taxes that be stoppin' the food from reachin' the hungry bellies! Ye best be listenin' or we'll make ye walk the plank! Aye, aye, Captain Crunch!
The United Nations has given South Sudan a good talking-to, telling them to ditch the new taxes and charges that caused the suspension of U.N. food airdrops for folks who rely on outside help. Those poor 60,000 souls living in places you can't reach by road have been left hungry since March, and that number is set to rise to 135,000 by the end of May. The U.N. says these new charges would have cost them a whopping $339,000 a month, enough to feed over 16,300 mouths. Anita Kiki Gbeho, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator for South Sudan, ain't thrilled: "Our cash is for saving lives, not jumping through hoops."These charges are messing with the U.N. peacekeeping mission in South Sudan too, affecting everything from patrols to building schools. South Sudan promised to scrap these charges back in February, but they haven't put it in writing yet. About 9 million out of 12.5 million folks in South Sudan need a hand, and the country's also dealing with an influx of refugees from nearby Sudan, making things even messier.
