Last week, reports surfaced that soldiers of Burma's military government carried out a massacre of over 30 civilians in Let Htoke Taw village. This bloodshed is just the latest in a series of mass killings in the country's brutal civil war. The military government has denied these accusations in the past, often blaming resistance forces instead. Since seizing power in February 2021, the military's violent repression of peaceful protests has sparked widespread armed resistance, escalating into a full-blown civil war.In the recent attacks, at least 15 resistance members and civilians were killed in an airstrike, while 32 others died in fighting in central Magway and Mandalay regions. In Let Htoke Taw, 33 people were killed during an army raid, with many villagers being wounded in the process. The survivors described terrifying scenes of interrogation and mass shootings by the soldiers.The National Unity Government, Burma's main opposition group, operates in the shadows, claiming legitimacy over the ruling military. The soldiers also burned down hundreds of homes in the village, a tactic they have used repeatedly in response to armed resistance in Sagaing region.Let Htoke Taw village, previously targeted by soldiers, has been a site of intense conflict in the ongoing civil war in Burma.
